Cosmetic Gynaecology
Cosmetic gynaecology is a rapidly growing branch of cosmetic surgery. The demand for various procedures involving genital rejuvenation is increasing day by day as more and more females are becoming economically independent and body-conscious. The commonly demanded procedures include –
Surgical or non-surgical vaginal tightening
- 1. Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping or reducing the size of the labia minora (the inner “lips” of the vulva), and in some cases the labia majora (the outer “lips”).
Purpose of Labiaplasty
- Aesthetic reasons: Many women choose labiaplasty to improve the appearance of their genital area, especially if they feel self-conscious about large, uneven, or elongated labia.
- Functional reasons: Enlarged labia can sometimes cause discomfort during exercise, sexual intercourse, or even while wearing tight clothing. Labiaplasty can relieve this irritation and improve overall comfort.
- Post-pregnancy or aging changes: Childbirth and aging can change the shape or size of the labia, leading some women to seek surgery to restore a more youthful look.
- 2. Hymenoplasty
Hymenoplasty (also called hymen reconstruction surgery or hymenorrhaphy) is a cosmetic gynaecology procedure that involves the surgical restoration or reconstruction of the hymen — the thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening.
Purpose of Hymenoplasty
- Cultural or Social Reasons: In some cultures, an intact hymen is considered a sign of virginity. Women may choose hymenoplasty to restore the hymen before marriage or other significant life events.
- Personal Choice: Some women undergo the procedure for emotional closure or psychological healing after trauma such as sexual assault.
- Medical Needs: Rarely, hymenoplasty may be performed as part of reconstructive surgery following injury.
